As per the tried and trusted three-stage rotation cycle for Activision's flagship franchise, it's once again Treyarch's turn to deliver the next Call of Duty instalment and, rather than start fresh as Sledgehammer Games did with last year's WWII, the developer has opted to stick with its Black Ops series.

Beginning with a 60s-set Cold War tale and spanning all the way up to a fictional (hopefully) future set in 2065 amidst the backdrop of a third such conflict, where, or specifically, when, Treyarch plans to set game number four is anyone's guess, though with the traditional single-player component being ditched in favour of expanded multiplayer and zombies modes, a conventional setting may not be necessary, let alone relevant.

In regards to the rumours surrounding a battle royale mode, well, they're no longer rumours. Treyarch confirmed via its recent gameplay reveal that Black Ops' own spin on the battle royale genre - Blackout - will bring together characters, locations and weaponry from all corners of the series' universe and dump them in a single map that the developer is labelling as its biggest yet.
