9 Incredible Features WASTED On Disappointing Video Games

5. Open World Free-Running - Mirrors Edge: Catalyst

Mirrors Edge
EA

In a classic case of "be careful what you wish for", Mirror's Edge: Catalyst was on fan wish lists for years before it came out, but then when EA actually went ahead and greenlit a sequel, nobody cared. In part that was because the sequel itself wasn't a total home-run, with the main problem being the jump from a linear free-running game to one set in an open world.

On paper, that should have been awesome; no longer would you be funnelled down these carefully constructed areas that limited your movement options, but instead thrown into a huge sandbox where you could craft your own routes alongside the authored ones the developers created. In practice though, the gameplay was nowhere near as satisfying as it should have been, and the new structure actually negatively impacted the flow of the story.

Like the original, it was a great concept surrounded by a disappointing game, and it's a shame DICE will probably never get a third attempt to get it right.
