9 Oddly Terrible Levels In Otherwise Great Video Games

9. Crysis - Alien Spaceship Level

Crysis is a wonderful game. It was a prototypical shooter that catered to nearly all players in one way or another, and allowed neat customization of most of its features. It had its share of problems, as blockbuster games tend to, but it was really great. Not to mention that it was way ahead of its time in terms of graphic fidelity. Regarding the gameplay, there were always multiple ways to tackle a situation. One could customize his arsenal with many different attachments, search for alternative routes on the map or try out entirely different play styles. Now imagine somebody took away all that stuff; all the weaponry, all the freedom and even the signature gameplay, leaving you in a rather confusing but strangely linear level with absolutely no way to alter the way it plays out. That actually happens about two thirds in the game, when Nomad enters the ancient alien craft to make his way through the collapsing mountain. Make no mistake, this was something otherworldly, something that we have never dreamt of seeing in an interactive form. If only it wasn't such a drag to play through. See, this was an alien ship in every possible way. Everything about it felt as if it came from somewhere else. While this was great because it was something new, the level had suffered in terms of gameplay. We were really left with no other options than to shoot the aliens in the face and float around the ship. Worse yet, since we were forced to play without gravity, the control scheme and orientation were confusing, to say the least! Anyway, there were no other ways to complete the level, there were no options. Three weapons and a pistol, that's all we got. Even though the game went back to the familiar Crysis experience afterwards, this level left a sour impression on many players. Hey, at least it looked absolutely gorgeous!
