When your fan-made remake gets the seal of approval from the original title's developers, you know you're onto something good.

Black Mesa is a homage to the incredible legacy that Half-Life created for itself. Responsible for putting Valve on the map as a developer and spawning successful spin-off franchises Counter-Strike and Team Fortress, it is an iconic moment in gaming history and a near-perfect title in its own right.

Nearly.

If there is one painstaking part of playing Half-Life, it is the notorious Xen levels. These transport players to a mysterious alien world, but the whole experience was jarring, ugly and simply not fun to play. Thankfully, in Black Mesa, these sections are the biggest beneficiaries of the facelift supplied by the game's new engine.

These levels now feel so much more vibrant, are a breeze to get through compared to before, and the amount of work the developers put in makes this feel like the epitome of the labour of love Black Mesa is.
