Released eighteen years apart, developers Hanger 13 did a stellar job in rebuilding the story of Tommy Angelo and the Salieris for the eighth generation of systems. Over twenty times the amount of polygons could be rendered in the remake versus the original, giving Tommy's gripping rise and fall through the underworld of organised crime much more depth and emotion than before.

Where the remake really excelled was in how it built the fictional world of Lost Heaven. The 2002 game was respectable enough as an open-world title, but critics were fairly scathing towards the low draw distance at the time.

Thankfully, this poor rendering is long gone in the remake and the 2020 remake is, in fact, one of the most gorgeous and ambitious worlds in recent times. Volumetric lighting gives the world so much vibrancy, especially during nighttime, and high-quality depth of field is extended to the game's cinematics.

What's more, not only does Lost Heaven feel like a bigger world in the remake, but also one that is so much more alive. Incidental occurrences are prevalent throughout the world, giving Mafia's remake an unpredictability that only helps its replayability value.
