There are several rules for Dark Souls 2 boss Ancient Dragon, as there are for most FromSoftware bosses infamous enough to have spawned countless Reddit threads and forum posts. They are as follows.

Don’t stand in front of his mouth when he’s breathing fire, stay near his head unless his wings move because that means it’s flame o’clock, do not lock on because the camera is not your friend, and by god do not, for any reason, end up under his foot. Unless you really love that ‘You Died’ screen.

That’s because getting caught under that gigantic foot, or honestly dallying near it for any length of time, will lead to your inevitable and speedy demise.

It doesn’t help that by his foot feels like one of the safer places to be and yet the hitbox on it coming down anywhere in your vicinity will take half your health in one fell swoop even if you’re certain he barely grazed you. Try to get away from said foot and you risk not being able to do damage at all, or being targeted by the aforementioned fire breath which is going to sap your health just as fast as getting pancaked under his claw. Much like Final Fantasy XV’s Adamantoise, this thing also hurts you just by moving in your direction.

Ancient Dragon is Dark Souls 2’s Bed of Chaos which would also be right at home on this list. If you know, you know. It’s all BS attacks all day long and some truly wild hitboxes.
