9 Most Shocking Betrayals In Gaming History

6. Albert Wesker Turns Double Agent On S.T.A.R.S.

The original Resident Evil was a landmark title in survival horror. By placing you inside the confined walls of an enormous mansion and filling it to the brim with flesh-eating zombies, it put you in a very real state of fear. Your ammunition was limited and if you found yourself overwhelmed, it became very easy to see that unpleasant game over screen. But there was perhaps nothing more shocking in the original Resident Evil than the revelation that Albert Wesker, the captain of STARS, was a double agent working for the evil Umbrella Corporation. Having lured the members of the team directly into a trap, built to use the unknowing agents as canon fodder for their mutilated creatures no less, Wesker became the true villain of the series. His betrayal was a sharp one, as he showcased his penchant for cruelty by manipulating STARS member Barry Burton into doing his dirty work. Wesker's betrayal was enough to catapult him into becoming the most hated man in the Resident Evil universe, as well as the most popular. His turn was a successful and timeless one and it created a memorable villain that will not soon be forgotten.
