9 Most Shocking Betrayals In Gaming History

5. Catalina Betrays Claude

Grand Theft Auto is one of the biggest franchises in the history of gaming. As a whole, it's sold over 100 million copies worldwide. The true boom for the series happened with GTA III - released in 2001 on the PlayStation 2. A game that has since sold over 13 million units. Would you believe that the catalyst for GTA III was a betrayal? In the opening cinematic of the game, the silent protagonist known as Claude was shot by his criminal girlfriend Catalina. This jumpstarts the game as his story of revenge is centred on this one moment. He's sold out by his gang and sent to prison where he's soon busted out and starts a bloody path to get his much deserved vengeance. He works his way up, betraying a few men and women of his own along the way, to get the 411 on the Colombian Cartel and take out Catalina for good. Catalina leads the anti-hero of GTA III into a deadly chase in the final moments of the game, and in true super-villain fashion threatens the life of his love interest in the process. As Catalina ascends into the sky via a helicopter, believing herself to have been completely successful, she at last gets her comeuppance via a rocket placed straight into the cockpit. She was a vile woman, and was taken care of accordingly. But no one can doubt that Catalina's betrayal may have been the first step in making GTA the powerhouse it is today.
