Maybe it's because so many games don't seem to be bothered about using it, but when titles come out that make environmental destruction a centrepiece, they always turn into something special.

And when a game like Red Faction: Guerrilla transfers that taste for total destruction over to an online arena, it instantly elevates what could have otherwise been a by-the-numbers multiplayer mode into a far more memorable experience.

Actual third-person shooting was never Red Faction's strong point, but that shortcoming didn't matter when you could imaginatively use everything around you to your advantage. Fighting an enemy and feeling a little overwhelmed? Blow up the floor from underneath you to make a swift escape. Want to set an ambush for the opposing team? Just turn all the exits to rubble so they have to come through you eventually.

These magic moments didn't happen every match, but when they arrived they made Guerrilla's otherwise standard multiplayer feel special.
