In every possible way, Bioshock 2 was one of the most underrated games of the last generation. Even its multiplayer - which many fans derided as a money grab that tarnished the spirit of the franchise - was damn better than it had any right to be.

Given its own reason for existing within the game's universe (each match is framed as being part of the civil war that eventually brought Rapture to its knees), there's a depth and complexity here that was entirely missing from the other single-player games that chased the multiplayer bandwagon at the time.

Adding a uniquely Bioshock spin to classic online modes (here you're searching each map to find Little Sisters rather than flags), this second game kept the staples of the franchise intact while delivering a surprisingly addictive multiplayer suite.

Throw some Big Daddies and Plasmids into the mix and there was enough variety here to keep Bioshock 2's multiplayer afloat - it's just a shame that most players didn't decide to jump on board.
