9 Terrible Openings That Almost Killed Great Video Games

1. NieR: Automata

Square-Enix

Although it has a rather impressive on-rails introductory battle, once Nier: Automata finally unleashes its open world the game grinds to an immediate halt, introducing you to a myriad of mundane side quests and a main campaign that's initially comprised of doing favours for everyone you meet.

Fortunately though the decision to overwhelm the player with a large amount of seemingly innocuous quests in Nier's slow start has a purpose, used to introduce players to a sense of repetition and a gameplay loop that's later revealed to be more substantial and satisfying than it first appears.

This is a game that's supposed to be played through three times, and unfortunately the significance and impact of its opening hours don't come to fruition until you've at least finished the first part of this sprawling RPG.
