7. Street Fighter's Sheng Long

Having a strange, illusive, in-game mystery is a great way of investing your fans into something deeper than just your gameplay mechanics, and makes it truly feel like we're living in a real world full of individual people and adventures that we're only scratching the surface of. Whilst Street Fighter isn't really the first game that comes to mind when you think of narrative investment, it really did have it's moment when the deceptive Sheng Long was thrown into the mix.

And who exactly is Sheng Long? No-one. The name is just a mistranslation from the original language into English that resulted in 'You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance' as being the win quote from Ryu. But the developers and Electronic Gaming Monthly, the scamps, would have you think otherwise.

Sheng Long has was transformed into a secret boss hidden within the Street Fighter games by rumours spread from these sources, despite never actually existing. Instead of Capcom admitting they messed up, they decided to take everyone on a ride incorporating Sheng Long into their gaming mythos, and since we were all taken in by it - a legend was born.
