4. The Last of Us - The Bummer Ending & The Singing Ending

I’ve got a two for one for you here, starting with the super depressing ending that might even be more of a bummer than the shipped ending of The Last of Us: Part II. While the version we played saw Ellie decide not to do a murder on Abby with the thematic suggestion being that with that action, or rather, inaction, the cycle of violence ends, this wasn’t the only ending Naughty Dog had planned. Originally, there was a very strong possibility that Naughty Dog would have Ellie kill Abby at the end but they decided that was too much of a bummer.

Frankly, that studio looking at any moment in The Last of Us and deciding it’s too depressing is very telling. That said, it would have been cool to see.

So let’s lighten things up with another ending we wish we’d seen and that’s the extremely strange fully improvised singing ending that the voice actors played out in motion capture suits in the final hospital face-off in the original. The story goes that Troy Baker kept dropping his prop gun so Druckmann insisted he carry on with the scene no matter what, a prank then ensued as Marlene’s voice actor Merle Dandridge burst into song, and Troy followed suit. It’s on YouTube and well worth a watch.

Since they were already in mo-cap suits the fact Naughty Dog didn’t render this one up for us is a travesty.
