The Longest Journey, and its sequels Dreamfall and Dreamfall Chapters make up some of the better point-and-click games ever made.

At least in my opinion. Because, The Longest Journey is my favourite game of all time. Though given its stellar ratings if you played it you probably like it too. That makes it all the more crap that the game’s heroine never got her rightful ending.

The Longest Journey centred on 18-year-old April Ryan journeying across the worlds of science and magic on a quest to fulfil her chosen one destiny. Upon discovering she isn’t the chosen one, we leap forward Dreamfall, set 10 years later, where April is now one of three playable protagonists and is, to put it lightly, pretty damn jaded. Even still, getting to revisit a beloved character after waiting 7 years between games was a delight even if she wasn’t the focus. Then came Dreamfall Chapters 8 years later, a game that didn’t feature April at all. At least not in any way that wasn’t a vague reference. What developer Red Thread Games did do was promise that if the Dreamfall Chapters Kickstarter hit 2 million dollars they would make a game called The Longest Journey Home, telling all of April’s story.

This was in high demand because between clues she’s part dragon, lives in a house between worlds, might have reincarnated into a whole other person, and a dozen other fan theories, the questions far outweighed the answers.

Despite writing on the Kickstarter page that the story needs to be told and we deserve to hear it, the Kickstarter wrapped at just over 1.5 million, falling short of the stretch goal. Given licensing issues with the IP belonging to Funcom as well as the ten years that have passed since the possibility was floated, this is an unreleased ending that we’re probably never seeing.
