9 Very Possible Gaming News Headlines From 2025
3. Re-Selling & Refunding Digital Games Is The Norm
If the entire industry continues to move online - even the likes of PlayStation-exclusive Kena: Bridge of Spirits saw its physical edition delayed - there has to be more rights for digital consumers.
As of 2018 a staggering 80% of all video games sold were digital, and while I absolutely love a good collector's edition or being able to unwrap the cellophane of a title on launch day, the reality of faster digital access wins out for the majority.
However, as the 2010s spelt out in flashing neon letters: Video games are rarely in a state worth full price at launch, and alongside the fact that you should be able to sell a digital title online, the same way you can in real life.
Whatever form this takes will likely go through a few iterations. The whole idea of opening up re-selling of digital goods is rife for opportunists to mess with and take advantage of (just look at NFTs), but it has to happen.
2025 will be the mid-point for the current generation, and as physical sales have no reason to come back en masse, consumers need a legal way to pass their games onto others, or know they're entitled to a refund if something is wrong.
