Before you send the Wild Hunt after me, let me be clear, Hearts of Stone is not a bad DLC. It’s a fantastic DLC. But boy does it feel weird to play if you kick into it right after concluding the base game.

No matter what ending you find yourself at when Geralt’s trilogy concludes an enormous amount has gone down that’s going to be pretty hard to shake. Maybe Geralt met up with Ciri or Yen and all was well, or perhaps you watched your beloved protege die because of a few poor decisions and Geralt succumbed to his grief to a fate unknown surrounded by monsters.

No matter which way it went, even a story as fantastic as Hearts of Stone is tough to enjoy without the pangs of knowing where your favs all ended up.

While Hearts of Stone absolutely deserves to be played, it really fits in better before the main quest line reaches its ultimate conclusion. Whatever that conclusion may be. If you happened to play it after the main game, stepping away from Geralt’s central narrative and character progression to tell a new story can feel a little jarring.
