9 Video Games Ruined By Ridiculously Last Minute Changes
4. Including Then Ripping Out Loot Boxes - Star Wars: Battlefront 2
Initially, Star Wars Battlefront 2 made all the right moves. Though the first try at EA's reboot series wasn't terrible, it was certainly disappointing, and the marketing campaign for the sequel made it clear that the publisher had heard the criticisms loud and clear.
This time around, there'd be a single-player campaign, more depth to the classes, more variety in the weapons, original, prequel and sequel trilogy content, and all the DLC would be added free of charge. It looked like they had every box ticked, until a bombshell dropped in the weeks leading up to launch.
During that final push, it was revealed that Star Wars: Battlefront 2 was a microtransaction-riddled mess. The free DLC had come at the price of loot boxes, pay-to-win features and a grind that was quite frankly insulting.
Now, while there's no proof that these systems came late in the day, we do know from reports on other games, like Call of Duty, that they're usually only finalised close to launch.
Even without that though, the decision to then rip them out and figure out a new progression system in the months after launch did a lot of short-term damage as well, leaving players with a game that clearly was a work in progress. A delay would have improved everything.
The team has turned the ship around now, but it was a long, long hill to climb.
