Obviously the fallback is - as always - that "it's totally optional", especially if you tend to play FIFA casually or only in multiplayer, yet the reality is a mode that feeds off the "one more try" instinct to really rack up the cash.
EA's CFO Blake Jorgensen has even stated that across FIFA, Madden and NHL (all with these 'Ultimate Team modes), the "extra content business" adds a tidy $1.3 billion dollars to their coffers in total.
As if EA, of all people, needed another revenue stream.
