9 Video Games That Punish You For 100%

9. Maxing Out Ring Capacity - Sonic Frontiers

Sonic Frontiers
SEGA

For as long as there has been a speedy blue hedgehog who needs to move quickly there has been the strong incentive to pick up rings, and 2022’s Sonic Frontiers is no different.

Except that it is a little different because while you’ll be given the opportunity to increase your ring capacity, you really shouldn’t. That’s because the game will prompt you to invest in either increasing your speed or your ring capacity and increasing your ring capacity will only up the ring cap which you should be ideally sitting at as long as possible in game. When you are at the maximum ring cap you unlock a cutscene where you power up, meaning you’ll move and dash faster.

If it’s not already clear, you’re going to want that.

Of course, that’s harder to achieve the higher your ring cap is so while it might be tempting to invest in ring capacity as this will make Sonic more able to withstand damage, you’re ultimately working against yourself for the main aim of this game which is, of course, speed. If you actually got your ring capacity to 100% you’d make it extremely difficult for yourself to hit the ring cap, thereby missing out on that all important speed boost. Luckily if you’ve specced entirely into ring capacity and realised all of this too late there is the option to swap points out later on so you’ll be good to go.
