What You Wanted: WCW Revenge

The WCW games have always been a bit of a mixed bag, haven't they? Some have been utterly brilliant and some...well...we all remember how terrible Backstage Assault was right? I still have nightmares.

Yet out of the oily carnage came one game that was utterly brilliant - WCW/NWO Revenge for the N64.

This game was a love letter to the wrestling industry, putting effort into modelling actual PPV arenas, Including Ring Entrances and providing one of the most rounded out wrestling rosters at the time. And as a Playstation 1 kid all you could do was sigh and look at the sequel that they got that was just ...well ...it weren’t no Revenge, let me tell yah something, brother.

WCW/NWO Thunder tried its best to evolve the formula but ended up slipping on its own grease, because it tried to add in a combo system that was more in line with beat em ups than wrestling games. Plus, it didn’t help that the majority of the assets were exactly the same as the previous game, meaning that while it was meant to be a step forward, iy didn’t feel like it advanced very much at all.

Shame.
