9 Ways Assassin's Creed Odyssey Is Dividing The Fanbase

8. Embracing Superpowers & The Supernatural In General

Speaking of what is essentially now a magic spear, Ubisoft ended their E3 reveal trailer with Medusa showing up as a boss battle.

The latter is reminiscent of AC Origins' foray into battling Egyptian Gods in the DLC, or a late-game mission that had you fight a snake the size of a tower block. All of these duals were kinda filed under, "Well, it's the afterlife/a dream sequence/spiritual plane" or "it's not really part of the main story so it's okay enough", but even when the aforementioned snake was first seen in a trailer, it drew puzzled looks from series veterans.

Now, it's imperative to say that Assassin's Creed has always had supernatural elements - though the unexplained ones were always the weakest part of the series. Al Mualim wielding the Golden Apple to multiply himself and freeze you in place flat-out sucked, but things like going face to face with Minerva in AC II is one of the best moments in all the games.

Lastly, a tiny thing, but new characters Alexios and Kassandra both have the same "eagle communication" ability as Bayek from Origins. It was never explained or addressed why someone could see through the eyes of an owl and command their every move, and Odyssey is just carrying on, hoping nobody ever asks the relevant questions.
