9 Ways The Gaming Industry Is Currently Trolling All Of Us

6. 'Definitive Editions'

While on the subject of money-making schemes, how about the phenomenon that is the 'Definitive Edition'? These come in two forms; either those that can be bought upon launch with the promise of first-look at new content, or those that collect - let's say - a year's worth of DLC to be re-packaged into the original title 12 months later. Either one will set you back approximately double the price of a standard game. I can get on board with the idea of DLC; there have been enough games that felt full and worthwhile enough that their DLC releases were more like extra content than missing pieces. What I can't accept, however, is how easily a game can be doubled in value when the sum of its parts far from equal the additional expense. The fact that so many of these extra editions have to be padded out with shoddy collectibles - that are cool for about 30 minutes until you realise you could've bought a better quality version online for a fraction of the price - is a damning indictment of just how skewed the value of games themselves have become. It's worse still, when you consider just how powerless we are to correct this right now.
