Nintendo don’t have a great history when it comes to online features, though with the promise of lots of online support for Pokémon and Smash doing very well online, maybe the tide is finally turning.
Nintendo has clawed back a massive foothold in the home console market after the Wii U’s commercial failure. Even the massive success of the Wii saw it viewed more as a family toy than a serious games console in the style of the NES, SNES, N64 and now the Switch. With this in mind, Nintendo has to adapt to current expectations of online involvement in most games.
Obviously, there’s not going to be an Animal Crossing Battle Royale mode where you hurl newly collected fossils at each other. At least, hopefully there’s not.
However, considering the nature of the game, why not some sort of online flea market? Trading resources could connect you with other players, and possibly reward you with an online exclusive item.
Either that, or some bugs or fish might only be in an online community area, needing teamwork to capture them. There’s a lot more to online than just PvP or PvE combat.
