Assassin's Creed Origins Review: 6 Ups & 5 Downs
2. Some Notable Problems With Loot & Loot Grind
This is one hell of a hair to split, but whilst I said weapon variety and the sheer amount of things you're getting is welcome and rewarding, the actual utilisation of them wears thin over time.
Specifically, you might get 10 different-looking types of spear, but across the board chances are they'll only amount to different damage boosts, bleed damage or perhaps poisoning an enemy. There aren't any standout weapon buffs or traits resigned to the Rare or Legendary groups, and as you can get these things very fast from beginning to end, almost makes you question the 'tiers' of loot at all.
Being Ubi are making this entry in the series as an "appeal to all" demographic-slaying multi-million dollar behemoth, perhaps such loot labels are only in there because "that's what's 'in' right now"? A Legendary weapon certainly doesn't feel all that "legendary", put it that way.
Lastly, although they are completely optional and ultimately pointless, scores of cosmetic items can only purchased with the Helix currency, which you can ONLY get through microtransactions
Props (I guess?) to Ubisoft for not making any of the main progression pay-more-to-play, but it's worth pointing out as amidst this tumultuous loot-dependant time, Origins doesn't emerge unscathed.
