5. The Main Character

The first and possibly most major departure for the series is the rumoured protagonist in Assassin's Creed: Comet. For the first time ever it seems that the main character is going to be a member of the Templar Order. While you played as Haytham Kenway at the start of Assassin's Creed 3, you weren't going into it knowing that he was an enemy Templar €“ it was a huge surprise accompanied by a perfectly named 'How D'ya Like Them Apples' achievement that popped at just the right time. But using a Templar character instead of an Assassin might change certain things about the playing style of the game immediately. For example, unless the character is a former Assassin €“ much like Duncan Walpole or Haytham €“ then in theory they might not have hidden blades... a trademark of the series. But it wouldn't take a genius to realise that a Templar player character could simply kill an Assassin and take the hidden blades off the corpse. As for parkour, Edward Kenway showed that non-Assassins could do it, as have the couriers have throughout the franchise - so at least that part of the game looks set to stay. In fact, further details released by several of the motion capture artists for the parkour sequences, showed that wall running might be added to both Comet and Unity. Also the very wide range of appearances that Templars have taken across the franchise so far will give the designers a completely free hand in creating this potential character. Naturally a great deal will depend on the period and the setting, but they won't be restricted to avoiding weapon sets used by previous Assassins and starting with a character design involving a white hood and working outwards. It'll be interesting to see if this one is true, as a Templar character could result in a separate spin-off series appearing within the same Assassin's Creed universe.
