Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate - 10 Things It Must Learn From Brotherhood

3. Having Medicine Is Better Than Health Regeneration

Having regenerating health in a game isn't particularly realistic, but it seems to be the preferred system for a lot of current games. The alternative is having health packs or potions to carry around, which in many cases is a better system.

Both AC2 and Brotherhood used health packs (or medicine) as their health restoration system, and it feels a lot nicer as a result. Regenerating health has always always run into the problem of players having to duck out of combat for a moment to rest up, after which they're at full strength again - but it ruins the flow of the game. With health potions, you can carry on fighting, but once they're gone - they're gone, so it requires a bit more careful planning before taking on a mission.

Having said that, there is room for improvement - Ezio could carry around way too many medicines in his pouch, which while fine for those who just want the story, does limit the appeal for those looking for a proper challenge.

Ubi have implemented both styles in the series so far, with regenerating health taking over in AC:3 and in Black Flag - but returning to medicine packs in Unity. Hopefully they've learnt that regenerating health doesn't really fit with the series - but they should've known that since Brotherhood.
