Assassin's Creed: Victory - 10 Things It Must Learn From Black Flag

6. A Plausible Backstory For The Hero's Abilities

Despite Edward Kenway being a brilliant lead character, he wasn€™t without his flaws. The burning question being; how and when exactly, did he learn to climb and fight so well? With Ezio, we received a backstory as to his athletic traits: racing his brother and exploring the rooftops of renaissance Florence, as well as gradually learning new techniques throughout the story. Even boring Connor had some reason for his assassin ability due to his role as a hunter within his native tribe and the training he received from Achilles. Edward inexplicably has all the tools and skills to make a great assassin with no solid reason given, which comes across as lazy and does very little to make the adventure as realistic as it can possibly be. With a game that is anchored so heavily by a narrative story, there should certainly be room for at least a little reason or explanation as to why the characters we are playing as have these exceptional skills. As discussed previously, AC Victory needs to ensure the protagonist is interesting while equally complex, with a clearly established motive, but he (or she) should also have a plausible reason for the ability to perform all the amazing tricks and skills that are synonymous with the franchise.
