Batman: The Enemy Within Episode 1 Review - 7 Ups & 3 Downs

5. The Grim & Violent Tone

Batman The Enemy Within Saw
Telltale

Make no mistake, this is a thoroughly unpleasant game at times, full of grim gore and violence, and an overall funereal tone that feels miles away from even the gritty mood of the Christopher Nolan Batman films.

There are dismembered body parts, slit throats, brutal beatings and devastating character deaths that all add up to make this one of the more downcast Batman stories in recent pop-culture, but one that totally earns this tone.

While some may lament the general lack of comic relief, the brutal through-line further cements just how dangerous a character as potentially campy as The Riddler really is, especially when it comes to the gnarly traps he sets for Batman, Jim Gordon and others.
