Battlefield 2042 Review: 6 Ups & 6 Downs

3. Weapon And Team Balance Isn’t There

Quite frankly, the weapon balancing in 2042 at the moment sucks.

Assault rifles might as well be non-existent, thanks to the extreme recoil and low damage output. While it is refreshing that DICE decided to give weapons the kick fans have craved for a while, inconsistency between classes makes the implementation frustrating. SMGs, for instance, currently outclass rifles even at range. How does that work? I have no idea, but it makes the already limited weapons even more limited.

Add in hit registration issues on top of this, with bullets clearly impacting targets but not registering damage, and gunplay sometimes devolves into nothing but frustration.

Team balancing issues also rear their head. For instance, playing Breakthrough, a great mode when things are working correctly, matches can be over in an instant, with one team often dominating. It’s not uncommon for attacking teams to not capture the first set of objectives and between this and being kicked back to the menu after every match, it’s difficult to get into a proper flow with the game.

Thankfully DICE is already addressing these issues at the time of writing - promising fixes in the future and already tweaking Breakthrough settings - but this stuff should be sorted at launch.
