Battlefield 2042 Review: 6 Ups & 6 Downs

1. Disappointing Destruction

Destruction has always been a staple of Battlefield, but on certain maps in 2042 you’d be forgiven for forgetting about it entirely.

While there are still some structures scattered around maps that can be blown up and partially destroyed, these are often the exception, rather than the rule. More than ever, the maps in 2042 are filled with environments and interiors that can’t be destroyed, resulting in levels that feel more static than in previous titles.

It’s such a shame, especially with this being the first next-gen game in the series, to see DICE’s attention move away from this core pillar of gameplay. It feels almost like an obligation at this point, rather than a unique mode of play that can be utilised to make interesting pathways through levels.

It’s not a total failure, but playing Portal reminds you what the destruction could have been like in All Out War.
