Battlefield 6: 10 Fatal Mistakes DICE Must Avoid

2. Using A Historical Setting

Listen, Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V were both pretty solid, ok?

Historic weaponry, horses, swords, that nostalgia for early 2000s war games - all great stuff.

But let's get back to proper Battlefield, shall we?

There's nothing wrong with setting a Battlefield game during the two World Wars. On the contrary, they can and have been the inspirations to some fantastic settings and some truly perceptive storytelling.

Sadly, DICE has already missed the boat on the latter.

There was just always a sense that Battlefield no longer belonged to these time periods, what with the constant ahistorical concessions needed to justify the setting.

Battlefield 1, despite being set over a century ago, was littered with red dot sights and automatic weaponry. Hardly a game breaking anachronism, but why use a historical period if you're not going to abide by its rules?

And even from the reveal trailer, Battlefield V felt strangely out of its time, what with the robot hands and strangely modern looking vehicles.

It's clear that Battlefield's gameplay features work best when they're allowed to thrive in a modern setting, and it's only in a modern setting where Battlefield 6 will be able to fulfill its true potential.

After all, if you can't splatter your enemies with helicopter blades, are you even playing Battlefield?
