Bethesda Indiana Jones Game: 6 Trailer Secrets You Missed
4. Indy's Letter To The Pope
A slightly more recognisable feature on the archaeologist's desk is an incredibly detailed map of Vatican City.
Coupled with the letter to a "Father B_" that Indy is typing; it will be no surprise if Indy has to tangle with some papal problems. The world's smallest country, the Vatican City state sits nestled in the very heart of Rome, just behind the towering majesty of St Peter's basilica.
Of course, we now know that Jones might be headed to Rome, and Indy seems to have a schematic blueprint detailing every nook and cranny of the Vatican. This heavily implies he will be breaking into or staking out the holy citadel in some way.
The Indiana Jones franchise is no stranger to brushing shoulders with Christian theology. In some cases, it very explicitly references it, morphing scripture to in-universe reality.
The Ark of the Covenant (of Raider's infamy) held the original ten commandments, and Christian lore states it has some retributive power: in the second book of Samuel, chapter 6 verse 9 a man called Uzzah is annihilated for bumping the ark - oops.
In Raiders of the Lost Ark, this translates into the Ark's magical Nazi-dissolving powers (perhaps a loose interpretation of scripture, although an undoubtedly awesome one).
So, if one holy Christian artifact can become a fully-fledged WND (Weapon of Nazi Destruction), what will an entire Vatican City of them hold in store?
