Borderlands 3 Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
2. The Calypso Twins Aren't Handsome Jack
The Calypso Twins Aren't Handsome JackThe early 2010s saw a notable uptick in video game villainry. We had Far Cry 3's Vaas Montenegro, Mark Hamill winning a BAFTA for Arkham City's Joker, and Borderlands 2's Handsome Jack becoming legend.
Literally everyone who knows video games knows this character, and going forward, we were either going to get a repeat of what worked (a la Pagan Min in Far Cry 4) or something else entirely. And in honesty, the idea of runaway Twitch streamers weaponising their influence to command legions of former foes, is more than fine by me.
Sadly though, Gearbox don't do anything with these two, other than surface level descriptions. And I don't mean "what more do you want?!", I mean they sit massive chunks of the story out altogether.
Where Borderlands 1 had the awkward meat-demon Destroyer fight out of nowhere and Handsome Jack was phenomenal, 3 is an admirable swing, but ultimately a miss.
