Breath of the Wild made it so weapons could serve multiple purposes dependent on usage, and could be found throughout the world instead of being locked behind dungeons.

The Korok leaf could be found by cutting down trees, more traditional weapons such as axes could be found on ranches or on enemies. Hammers could be found outside mines or in towns, and could hit boulders or break ore deposits to get gems.

One item however was notably missing: The Hookshot. A recurring item in the franchise, the Hookshot was a weapon first appearing in A Link to the Past back in 1992.

It allowed Link to target distant targets like vines or poles and pull himself onto them, or to be used offensively to stun or pull in enemies. It also solved puzzles by letting you manoeuvre over traps or reach areas otherwise inaccessible.

A notable dungeon was Twilight Princess' City in the Sky which made use of the 'Double Clawshot' to grapple between moving targets to traverse the floating ruins, pull down weights and attach to flying enemies to fight them in the air.

Early designs and concept art showed that a hookshot type device was designed to be included in BotW, but it was scrapped, as it made the climbing mechanic redundant. However with the trailer showcasing the dark underground caverns ripe for exploration, the Hookshot would be a perfect addition to Link's arsenal.
