What BotW gained in freedom, it lost in identity.

Gone where the days of searching around huge temples for maps and keys in order to track down some magical mcguffin guarded by a powerful boss whose only weakness was a weapon conveniently located inside the temple itself.

Instead, Breath of the Wild opted to introduce hundreds of 'micro-dungeons' scattered across the ruins of Hyrule.

These shrines may have been smaller but still posed quite the conundrum as they required extensive physical manipulation, problem solving or combat expertise to get their hidden spirit orbs. The game also included 4 more 'standard' Sacred Beasts that were larger in scale and included a dungeon boss that gave a game changing reward on defeat.

However these paled in comparison to some of Zelda's classic dungeons. Gone were the likes of Ocarina's torturous Water Temple, Skyward Sword's mysterious Ancient Cistern or Twilight Princess' beautiful Snowpeak Ruins

Only towards the end of the game did we get a glimpse of what we could have had, with the ruins of Hyrule Castle being a return to a more traditional Zelda dungeon crawl. A huge sprawling castle protected from all sides by the deadly Guardians, it featured many alternate and hidden routes between its crumbling floors and caves, that required extensive exploration to master.

With the sequel's trailer offering a darker exploration of the caverns beneath the castle, this may allude to more traditional dungeon gameplay, items, bosses and darker and more difficult dungeons.
