Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 - 10 Past Mistakes Activision Can't Repeat

9. Get Rid Of Linear Single-Player Levels

WW2 launched the series back to its previous, lofty heights, but by going back to basics it also picked up a few design mistakes that should have been left in the past. Most egregious was its renewed focus on linear levels, something which can be fine in theory, but the handholding and obvious artificial paths through levels deviated from what was otherwise a gorgeously presented recreation of the era.

Though COD games have always been linear in their design and focus, some of the previous releases attempted to open them up a little bit, whether it was allowing players to use a variety of abilities to clear areas in Advanced Warfare, branching paths in Black Ops 2 or the ability to play every campaign mission out of order in Black Ops 3.

This freedom has been more than welcome, and although the tighter, scripted set-pieces shouldn't be done away with altogether, it would be great to see Treyarch properly embrace multiple routes through levels, different choices that effect more than just gameplay, and, of course, missions that don't feel the need to constantly hold your hand.
