After years of updating the same old clunky engine, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will finally utilise a brand new set of tools to realise its vision. Apparently five years in the making, the engine is allegedly something of a beast according to those who've seen MW firsthand, easily making for the most visually-impressive, photo-realistic COD yet.

The capabilities of the new tech are pretty extensive, but essentially it has allowed Infinity Ward to make use of cutting-edge features like spectral rendering, world volumetric lighting, DirectX raytracing (on PC), better animations, 4K and full HDR support.

There's been a lot of work put into crafting the engine, and Activision are apparently sharing it with the other developers on the franchise for all future games. It's clear that they've created it with an eye on the future, and while Modern Warfare will debut on current-gen machines, it's been built on foundations that are next-gen ready.
