9. It's A Reboot, Not A Remake

To clear up all confusion as to whether or not the game was actually a direct sequel to Modern Warfare 3, some kind of hybrid reimagining of the previous three titles or something else, Activision and Infinity Ward have confirmed it's actually a full reboot of the entire franchise.

Rather than being chained to the continuity of their previous games, the lead developers have mentioned that they wanted to capture the ethos and feeling of those earlier games but in a modern context, creating a title that was current, biting, and ultimately reflecting what "modern" warfare really is.

Consequently, while there'll no doubt be references to the past sub-series, and recurring iconography that's become associated with it, the devs are not being shackled by previous stories or character arcs, and are instead striving ahead with their own, original narrative.
