Cyberpunk 2077 - 8 Major Worries We Can't Shake
7. Where Are The New Gameplay Mechanics?
If you combine everything that's out there, we have access to a good couple hours of Cyberpunk 2077 footage.
However, I'll give you a cookie if you can point to one - just one - new game mechanic that hasn't been done before.
Sadly, it's very hard to get away from the fact that everything on offer looks like Deus Ex's occasional "mini-open world" environments, with the scale cranked up. Yes we'll be talking to NPCs, upgrading abilities and undertaking missions where we spear enemy guards with blade arms, but it makes me wonder if Cyberpunk 2077 is aiming to be the best version of an established formula, more than concocting its own.
And while that will still result in a bankable framework and identity that guarantees people know what they're buying into, it's a double-edged sword.
The gaming industry has become inundated with safety this generation. Safe genres, safe mechanics, safe gameplay loops - things that made more money than ever... but also drained it of the one thing a creative medium needs to stay relevant over time: Risk.
Let Cyberpunk 2077 set a new bar for the genre with fresh ideas, not just another product of refinement.
