D&D: 10 Underused Monsters That Will Destroy Even The Toughest Party

8. Basilisk

At a paltry Challenge Rating of 3, a Basilisk isn't too terribly difficult to battle. It's relatively beefy as far as the damage it can take, but it is easy to hit, possesses lower-than-average speed, and its bite only does mediocre damage combined with a bit of poison, a damage type that can frequently be resisted.

No, the main problem with the basilisk is its dreaded gaze. Players who are close to the monster and choose to look at it run the risk of first being restrained and then subsequently turned into stone. With two simple rolls, players can find themselves irreversibly turned into rock: a substance easily broken in high-combat encounters.

The most damning problem one encounters with a basilisk is that the cure for petrification is Greater Restoration, a 5th level spell not often earned until considerably higher levels. As such, parties with a stoned party member are either going to have to find a way to reverse the effect themselves or lug a statue weighing several hundred pounds to a temple with a high-level healer.

Either way, a little bit of bad luck can spell disaster if you dare to catch this bad boy's glare.
