D&D: 10 Underused Monsters That Will Destroy Even The Toughest Party

7. Intellect Devourer

The Intellect Devourer is one of the weirdest creatures in the game. And considering the sheer breadth of monsters available to challenge party members, that is saying something. A brain on four clawed legs, the aberration is not a physically imposing foe. Nor is it meant to be.

Rather, the Intellect Devourer is a bit of a one-trick pony. But what a trick it is. A one-two combination sees the creature first stun its target. Once that is complete, the creature may then assume control of their victim. Done effectively, this means that the creature can take control of someone like the powerful Fighter or Barbarian, and force them to attack their allies.

The only way to end this effect is to reduce the player to 0 hit points, all while they're trying to kill their allies. Even when this happens, they are reduced to 1 Intelligence, meaning they can't do things like cast spells, use weapons, or even speak coherently.

All of this doesn't even kill the monster. It can repeat this entire effect again, horrifyingly enough. Whatever an adventuring party chooses to do, their first priority when they see an Intellect Devourer? Drop everything, and kill it.
