H.P. Lovecraft is an obvious inspiration to several of the abominations within D&D's Monster Manual, and nowhere is that better exemplified than in the Gibbering Mouther. This fleshy unspeakable horror is adorned with the mouths of its victims, oftentimes numbering in the dozens or even hundreds.

From each of these fanged mouths comes the unrelenting screams of the dead, each babbling in some indiscernible, maddening voice. Now, while the monster's physical attributes, including a painful bite that can knock an enemy flat on its back or ranged spit attack that can blind opponents, it's these voices that are the real problem.

Every turn, players run the risk of succumbing to its madness. Failures to resist mean that members of the party may find themselves running in haphazard directions, unable to do anything for their entire round, or even turning on their allies. To exacerbate things, the creature excretes a sort of sludge that slows down anyone trying to reach it. Some may get stuck altogether, with their salvation just out of reach.

The Gibbering Mouther isn't a creature that's going to destroy a party on its own, but it is definitely going to cause a substantial amount of mayhem.
