5. Flameskull

What you see is what you get with a Flameskull. Evocative of their namesake, these floating decapitated heads are often used by high-power spellcasters like a Lich and serve as sentries and guardians. That doesn't mean, however, that they should be underestimated.

Similar to others on the list, the Flameskull doesn't have much in the way of hit points or armor, but makes up for it in a bevy of ways. For one, it has inherent resistances, taking only half damage from lightning, necrotic, and piercing damage, and is completely immune to fire, cold, and poison. Suddenly about half of your party's capabilities are utterly useless. Additionally, it's magical resistance means any spells you do try to force it to save against it does so with an advantage.

And when it comes to its turn, watch out. This little firecracker is a deceptively powerful spellcaster, with attacks like Magic Missile, and Flaming Sphere in its arsenal. Additionally, each Flameskull can cast the dreaded Fireball spell once per day.

And say a group manages to finish off one of these guardians. Unless they are properly disposed of, namely through consecrating them with holy water, the monster shall rise again to further harass the group once more, becoming a recurring nightmare until you end its existence for good.
