Trolls themselves are no joke. Strong, fast, and constantly regenerating, they are often a vicious first encounter for new players. Thankfully, the source book Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes blessed dungeon masters with a wide variety of new kinds of trolls to harass a party well past their early levels.

The worst of these is likely the Venom Troll. Stronger and more resilient than its basic cousin, the Venom Troll has some nasty surprises in store for those who think the same strategies will work.

True to its name, the Venom Trolls claws inflict Poison damage while the bite can render an opponent Poisoned, giving them a disadvantage to all attacks.

However, the sacrifice one must make when fighting these bulbous nasties is the true test. Venom trolls, when struck by a blow, excreting a caustic poison gas from its body that deals damage each time its hit. That's right, if players want to hit this thing, they have to be willing to get hit in return or keep out of its range. Melee fighters beware.

Making it worse, the Venom Troll can voluntarily slice it open and release a massive blast of poison gas in all directions, causing further damage and Poisoning multiple opponents at once. While most monsters are might dread the damage you do to them, the Venom Troll only excels the more you hurt it.
