Death Stranding: 6 Reasons It Could Be FANTASTIC (And 5 It Could Be A Disaster)

10. Unique Mechanics

Death stranding
Kojima Productions

Kojima once stated that Death Stranding was the beginning of an entirely new genre, and seeing the gameplay, it's hard to doubt his claim. From the extensive weight management mechanics and the ability to measure the depth of streams, to maintaining your bladder levels and ability to balance, the different gameplay elements on show are completely unique to Kojima's new project.

As one of the key figures to spearhead the creation of the stealth genre in the late 90s, it's not difficult to imagine Kojima could establish a game that works around an entirely diverse set of mechanics and systems. After all, there's no doubting that Death Stranding's unusual moment to moment gameplay seems to diverge from the formula and, if done right, could act as a blueprint for a whole new type of game we've never seen before.

In an era where the typical open-world game assembles itself around the same group of repetitive tropes and tired cliches, Death Stranding's attempts to make traversal and survival interesting with layers of multifaceted new mechanics could be just the breath of fresh air the games industry needs.
