Death Stranding: Every Major Character Ranked & Explained

7. Sam Porter Bridges

Death stranding
Kojima Productions

The titular character and all in all protagonist, Sam Porter Bridges is very much a case of does what it says on the tin when it comes to naming conventions. As a porter that works for Bridges, Sam gets roped into reconnecting America by Bridget as her dying wish, but also because he is on a quest to find his long lost sister Amelie. He must do this with the help of the Chiral Network.

As the only playable character in the game, most will become very much accounted with him as frequent visits to the Private Room will have him in need of a shower, or just a refreshing Monster energy drink. That or he’ll want to pull ridiculous faces in the mirror.

What makes Sam special from most of the other characters in Death Stranding is the fact he’s one of the few DOOMS in the game, which is discovered early on during a conversation with Fragile. Even though he has an ability called the Extinction Factor, he is unable to see BTs outright without his trusty BB attached. DOOMS being a mysterious condition which gives a person a variety of cosmic powers.

As the final 2-hour cutscene plays out, it is explained Sam has DOOMS because he was given it by Amelie when he was brought back to life on the Beach. This was of course just after she had forced Die-Hardman to kill Cliff and almost Sam in the process.
