8. The Story Is Dull & Forgettable
Destiny's story is about space, and planets, and aliens and...stuff? We've played the story missions through to completion, and frankly it left us little wiser about what this game's plot really is. Were we just zoned out by the repetitive missions, or did Bungie manage to sell a $500 million game on a mostly non-existent story? Though brief snippets of character interaction are sandwiched at the beginning and end of missions, the dialogue is so bland and the structure so sloppy that we were never properly invested in it for even a moment. Where did Bungie go wrong? For starters, you can't even name your character, which is a basic staple of any MMO (or pseudo-MMO), and then there's another crucial mistake: the Grimoires you unlock throughout the game, which purportedly shed more light on the world, cannot even be accessed in-game. Instead, you need to visit Bungie.net or get the Destiny smartphone app, which when the in-game plot is so maddeningly piecemeal, is just a horribly thought-out decision. The story is way too short for the price tag, both that which consumers pay, and for a game costing half-a-freaking-billion dollars.
