Devil May Cry: 10 Reasons It's Awesome

7. Tone

If there's one thing I didn't like all that much about the Devil May Cry series, it's how freaking goofy the whole set-up is; I don't think I'll ever get the image of Dante lounging around, eating pizza and talking on the phone out of my head - it's just totally silly and detracts from his innate badassery, though I'm sure plenty will disagree with me on that. Thankfully, this reboot shifts the tone further to the right, again in line with the trendiness of dark, gritty fare, which some have attributed to the meteroic success of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. Though it would be insane to refer to the new Devil May Cry game as "realistic", it is a little more grounded than the other games, both in terms of how characters interact with one another, and the generally hardcore nature of the game. The tone still has plenty of humour, but it's just scaled back a tad, not as daft or occasionally grating as it was before; punchlines are only used now when they're a) appropriate and b) actually funny.
