Doctor Who: 10 Things The 2021 Video Game NEEDS To Be Great

8. Don't Just Rely On The Same Old Villains

Villains like the Cybermen and the Daleks are terrific - we are in no way going to deny that. Also, we hope (and expect) to see them in the game! It wouldn't be Doctor Who without them. But at the same time, even the most die-hard Who addict will probably admit that these baddies have been severely overused - especially the Daleks.

During the Russell T Davies era, three out of four series finales were big Dalek blockbusters. They were all great fun to watch, sure, but it does mean that we've had more than enough Dalek action over the years, and if the big climax of the game is a level where the Daleks or the Cybermen try and invade Earth for the millionth time, a lot of players will definitely roll their eyes.

So by all means, put the Cybermen and the Daleks in the game - just don't make them the main focus. Doctor Who's roster of villains is ridiculously huge, so why not look to the classic era and give an old, forgotten villain a modern lick of paint?

Giant insects like the Wirrn or the Zarbi could be insanely creepy and repulsive with the graphical fidelity that's possible today. Or what about the Celestial Toymaker, for some Riddler-esque puzzle sections? And then there's the Rani, the Sea Devils, and Axos. Or from the modern era, how about the Whispermen? They never got a chance to shine, but they have a lot of potential that could be exploited here.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
