The Super Shotgun is the genre perfected, with a two shot blast capable of blowing enemies to bits, coupled with a retro snap reload. There's no better gun that highlights Doom's core design: traditional FPS gameplay, enhanced by modern and innovative movement. Plus it's neat how you take it from a skeleton with rockets on his shoulders.
What makes the Super Shotgun better than its contemporaries in the 2020 sequel is the crucial edition of the Meat Hook, which, despite its macabre misnomer, is actually a chain. This chain allows Doom Guy to latch onto enemies and swing to their location, like the world's most threatening zipwire enthusiast.
It's this movement that makes the Super Shotgun the best weapon in Doom Eternal, because it revolutionises the gameplay in a way that no other weapon does. Only with the Super Shotgun can you go from shoving lead into a Soldier's rotten face, to swinging up to a pain elemental's eyeball for that all important Glory Kill. It's one hell of a gun.
